SERVICE TO OTHERS

As United Methodists we believe that the challenge issued by our founder, John Wesley, still applies today:

Disciples members participate in a variety of

mission activities locally, nationally, and

internationally. Here a member is blessed before

she leaves on a trip to Honduras.

For the past three summers Disciples UMC has hosted a free, weekly Children's Garden Club incorporating hands-on, interactive gardening

activities and is open to all area youth.

Home-Grown Missionaries

are the sons and daughters of members and have been called by God to serve other missions and ministries. Pictured below is Curt Floski conversing with Pastor Lora about his work for Grace Network International, an organization which assists Christian- based addiction/recovery programs.

The Nurture Committee

stands ready to call on members and friends in times of illness, grief or hardship. This group also organizes movie nights, hayrides, and other social activities.

Financial Peace University

is a 13 week, personal finance course that is open to members and non-members alike. Participants view and discuss DVD lessons presented by popular radio and TV host, Dave Ramsey, whose teachings are based on Christian values and principles.

Mission Trips

are periodically available to youth and adults at locations both near and far. In the past, youth have traveled to Michigan, Pennsylvania and St Louis. Adults have joined other groups in Mississippi and Honduras.

Crop Walk

is a yearly, October walk-a-thon which supports efforts to end hunger nationally and locally with donations to local food pantries. This is a joint effort among area churches.

Habitat for Humanity

builds affordable housing for families in Ogle County. Disciples takes an active roll in volunteering time and financial support toward this yearly project.

Do all the good you can

By all the means you can

In all the ways you can

In all the places you can

To all the people you can

As long as ever you can

Loaves & Fish and Lifeline

are the local food pantries that are supported by Disciples.  During the children's sermon on the  first Sunday of every month, the children walk down the isles to gather food and money from generous members.

Honoring veterans during worship and arranging a

special veterans display in the Fellowship Hall has

become a tradition for Disciples. Pictured above, a

worship service.

DUMC Trunk Trick or Treating

Reaching out to the community is a vital part of Disciples' ministry.  Here members are set up in the church parking lot, eagerly waiting for trick-or-treaters.

Lay Caregivers

are volunteers who have been specially trained to provide pastoral care such as hospital and shut-in visits when the pastor is not available.

Vacation Bible School

gathers for one week each summer. All community children are invited to go on an adventure of learning and exploration. A team of adults guides the experience with music, crafts, games, and skits.

Relay for Life

is an all-night walk-a-thon that raises money to fight cancer, honors cancer survivors, and pays tribute to those whose lives have been lost to the disease. Each June a "Driven Disciples" team participates in the Ogle County West event.
